Silat, as a word, is
rarely used alone in its countries of origin. Normally it
is used as an identifier of a combat system. Penjak Silat,
Bersilat, Kuntao Silat, Langka Silat Maphilindo Silat, etc.
Two methods of Silat
can be found at the Academy. The first is the Kuntao
Silat method handed down from Willem de Thouars.
Randall Goodwin, a Guro Tuan in Kuntao Silat under Maha
Guro de Thouars teaches classes twice a week at the Academy.
Randall has also been certified in Serak Silat by Pendekar
Paul de Thouars. This method is a blend of Silat and KunTao
systems that Willem de Thouars learned in Indonesia in his
youth.
The other method is
the Maphilindo Silat of Guro Dan Inosanto. Guro Inosanto
developed this method by blending several systems of silat
together from different sources. Some of those sourses are
Bukti Negara Silat, Malaysian Bersilat, Filipino Silat Kuntao,
Mande Muda Silat, Cimande Penjak Silat, and Harimau Silat.
Philip Gelinas becan
studying Silat under Eddy Jafri in 1981 and Guro Inosanto
in 1990. He now holds a 4th level in Maphilindo Silat
under Guro Dan Inosanto.
